Head Studies - All are oil on marble 12" x 12"

I have been painting on rocks for the past 18 years. Rocks are a basic component in my work because they carry intrinsic elements necessary for existence. They also have a physical presence, a unique natural beauty and are composed by layers of time which are clearly visible throughout their surfaces. They represent a fusion between life and matter as if momentarily frozen in time, a metaphor of a brief existence, like a thought, a memory or pure awareness. We are self conscious beings, all which is perceived that is condensed from microscopic synapse to the cosmopolite consciousness with its anthological memory is not didactic. But it is the most fascinating metamorphosis inside the most extraordinary form ever known to us, that is, the human brain. The shape of our head contains the intangible, the invisible. I find it fascinating that a small rounded form contains our consciousness; it contains all that is abstract and which defines us as "beings". If I were to paint pure thought I would try not to paint the image but allow the non painted elements in the marble to create the image. By applying paint mostly around the image and not to the image itself I would allow the non elements to become the element. This depiction of the intangible (thought) is what challenges me and I think that by working with the negative space I might visually accomplish this concept.
